Article: Plenty of personal reflection on Delta Goodrem's new album 'Child Of The Universe'

MONTHS after she was ridiculed and labelled too inexperienced to coach contestants on The Voice, Delta Goodrem has answered her critics – and dished on her ex.

Her new album, Child Of The Universe, features some intensely personal songs that reflect her relationship breakdown and the backlash she faced on the Nine Network’s ratings winner.

“I’ve always had to protect myself over the years because I want to be in this forever,” she tells Insider, sitting in an orange armchair in Sydney’s Studio 301 during a break from rehearsals for her national tour.

“I believe in peeling back layers one by one as I go and I have many layers and I’m a complex human like everyone else. In these songs I am more literal than I ever was and I am more straightforward than I ever was.

“I love metaphors and I love fantasy and I’ve written all of my albums with lots of that. But in this album you get to the point pretty quickly.”

Her current single, Wish You Were Here, is about the loss of a friend in a motorcycle accident.

However, one of the most telling songs on the album is I’m Not Ready, in which she provides an insight into her split from her former fiance, Irish singer Brian McFadden, after seven years together.

She sings: “I am broken; there’s a stranger on the phone, something is missing from seven years ago.”

She explains: “That is one of the most powerful songs I have ever written. The lyrics pretty much say it all. I am pretty obvious, I can’t skirt around that.”

Another song, Knocked Out, is about Goodrem’s time on The Voice, when she was criticised for being too nice.

“I was feeling a little bit heavy (emotionally) around the time of The Voice,” she says. “There was a small storm going on at that time. I sat down and let it out. The sentiment around that is ‘don’t underestimate me’.”

She explains why she is reluctant to talk about her personal life and would rather her music tell her story.

“It is invasive enough trying to write in song how you feel,” she says.

“I don’t feel any remote worry about talking in songs. If there’s anything anyone wants to know about me, read my lyrics and listen to the record. I understand I have to talk about things but I got into this for the music.”

Goodrem’s fourth studio album has been a long time coming, preceded by singles Sitting On Top Of The World, Dancing With A Broken Heart and Wish You Were Here.It has been five years since her last release, Delta.

During that time, she toured the world with Andrea Bocelli, wrote and performed with Michael Bolton and appeared as a coach on the hugely successful singing show, The Voice.

On a personal front, she made headlines with her break-up from McFadden and her subsequent romance with Nick Jonas, of Jonas Brothers fame.

“Everything happens for a reason,” she says. “People forget your life still goes on, even though you don’t have music out. I got to be a woman of the world again and took the time to reflect.”

Goodrem’s national tour kicks off in Brisbane on Saturday, with shows at Sydney’s State Theatre on October 31 and November 2.

She’s working on costumes with celebrated designers Bowie Wong and Michelle Jank and promises to play a selection of her new tracks as well as her biggest hits.

“I think my strongest thing is when I have got my shoes off and I can just be myself,” she says. “I feel I have grown into myself as an adult artist.”

On her career more generally, Goodrem says her ups and downs have made her the strong woman she is today.

“You have to fight for your art,” she says “My fire has reignited. I am so in love with music again. I’ve lived the gamut of colours in my life but I’m an extremist and wouldn’t have it any other way.”Wish You Were Here is out now. Child Of The Universe is released on Friday. Delta plays Sydney’s State Theatre on October 31 and November 2. Bookings: ticketmaster.com.au or 136 100.

Delta Goodrem covers Madison's January issue - out today!

Delta is on the cover of Madison’s January issue. Delta tells Madison’s Elizabeth Renkert about finding her “Voice” – and in turn herself.

When I first met Delta Goodrem back in 2007, we were on the set of her first-ever madison cover shoot. It was a sunny Sydney afternoon, and she was in a playful mood, all smiles and noticeably loved up with then-fiancé Brian McFadden. Five years on, we’re together again, and it’s more than apparent she’s been through some changes. Today, on her new shoot in Los Angeles, she arrives dressed in head-to-toe Chanel, a fitting look given she exudes the air of a more sophisticated, more knowing and certainly more independent woman.

Goodrem has been through a lot for somebody so young – meteoric fame, a battle with cancer, love affairs under intense public scrutiny – but I reckon she’s all the better for it. There is a depth to her that’s often lacking in those who began their career as child stars.

Goodrem’s list of professional achievements easily makes her one of our most successful exports, past or present. Her latest album, Child of the Universe, is her first in five years. And it’s gotten just the reaction she had been hoping for. “Everyone is being really positive about it. I feel really proud of and peaceful about the record, but I was quite emotional when it was first released. I put so much into it. When it finally came out it closed a chapter for me. I was a bit teary,” says Goodrem.

Goodrem is currently single, confessing she “needs” to be alone for the first time since she started dating. Her love-life has always been very public – but then, that will happen when you hook up with the likes of Mark Philippoussis, Brian McFadden and Nick Jonas.

Her protracted break-up with bad boy McFadden in 2011 saw Goodrem leave Australia’s shores and set up a more permanent home in Los Angeles. Has she learned much from past relationships? “It’s so important to notice your own patterns and make sure you don’t repeat them,” she replies. “And to always keep learning. Staying who you are, and finding people that bring out the best in you is what it’s meant to be about. I don’t think I’ve experienced that yet… I can love easily so I have to watch myself.”

McFadden has since married model Vogue Williams; he never notified Goodrem. “It wasn’t my style to be a public tabloid. I never saw myself, from the day I started, as that territory. But that relationship did drag me into a place that wasn’t really natural for me… The relationship [with McFadden] has been over for so long. I don’t feel anything anymore. I don’t have anything left.”

Goodrem got the chance to channel Mum – and renew her popularity with the Australian public – when she returned to the public eye with her role as a mentor on the inaugural local season of The Voice early in 2012. It seems everyone has a strong opinion on Goodrem, and are quick to sound those opinions, especially via social media where she earned a groundswell of support along with a whole heap of catty commentary.

Surely all that hit a nerve? Her response is measured: “I loved being on The Voice but the controversy surrounding my performance snowballed into something that didn’t even exist. I am the least controversial artist you will talk to! I just love music and I’ve tried to transition from a teenager into my late 20s. If there have been flare-ups or storms, I haven’t been the one creating them. It tests my patience because I know who I am and I won’t take it on if people are being negative.”

Goodrem speaks of her fans warmly, so much so that many people feel very comfortable (perhaps too comfortable) with the singer and approach her as if they know her intimately – it happened during our second interview in Sydney. A middle-aged man spied Delta in the hotel lobby and charged headfirst into sharing a long-winded opinion on her relationship with “that tennis player”. (Never mind the relationship with Philippoussis has been over for close to a decade!)

Being “on” for the past 13 years means Goodrem has had to work to find ways to unwind. She meditates whenever possible, when at home in LA she does Pilates on her outdoor deck and hikes with friends in the Hollywood Hills. “I’m very fortunate. I love my home in LA. And my home with Mum in Sydney is my sanctuary – that’s where my roots are! As a Scorpio, peaceful times to myself are crucial. And I don’t find them in the city. Some people need the water, but I need to be near the trees, in the garden…”

Yet Goodrem is just as quick to declare that her greatest love may actually be touring and performing for fans – two activities that allow her to be on a stage, pouring her heart out to thousands of people. It’s an interesting dichotomy, one she manages to embody with humility and an enviable amount of composure.

Delta Goodrem discusses Mardi Gras with DNA

She’ll be performing at Mardi Gras on Saturday and Delta Goodrem recently answered some questions about the big night.

She also spills on the upcoming series of The Voice and what to expect in 2013.

DNA: Most important question first: what are you going to wear for Mardi Gras?
Delta: This is my first ever Mardi Gras, I am so over the moon to have been asked and in true MG style I want to keep the creative a secret! A lot of my supporters know that I love to sparkle and given it’s Mardi Gras, it would almost be rude not to have a fabulous time and sparkle…Stay tuned.

What are you going to play – or is that a surprise?
This is definitely a surprise. I really want everyone to be free and open to just have a fantastic time – this is about love, acceptance and celebrating people and of course having a good old fashioned boogie!

Presumably you’re on at midnight or possible later. How will you stay awake?
I am going to try to curb my energy levels for the day so I build to the performance time – I think the adrenalin will keep me going no matter what time! There is so much love and energy in the air and I am sure that will keep me going. Failing that…a Soy Latte or two chai lattes. Lol!

Are you mates with Heather Small, who is also performing?
I haven’t met Heather but she is an amazing vocalist and performer so I look forward to meeting her backstage. She’s an inspiring woman who has had an amazing career. I can’t wait to have a cuppa with her out the back. I actually went to the opening of the Olympics and saw Heather perform, so it will be great to see her again.

What about Jake Shears from Scissor Sisters (who’ll be DJ-ing as Crystal Pepsi)?
I have been a Scissors Sisters fan for quite some time now, and have yet to see them live, so it’s perfect really! Jake is a very talented musician. Me and my team will be sure to have a dance when he comes on.

Have you partied at Mardi Gras before?
No but I have so many great friends who attend each year – I am beyond excited to be there with them. The amount of friends of mine who are so excited and have been asking for tickets has been crazy!

How do you prepare backstage before a big gig? Is it honey and whisky, a signature cocktail or a secret Delta special?
I wish I could tell you it’s whiskey but I don’t drink before singing but I will have friends with me that will definitely be enjoying champagnes, I am sure. A cheeky dirty martini after to celebrate will be on hand once I am done though!

When you think of gay anthems, what first springs to mind?
On the Radio – Donna Summer
Dancing Queen – Abba
I’m Coming Out – Dianna Ross
Queen of the Night – Whitney

What advice do you have for Ricky Martin as he joins The Voice?
Ricky doesn’t need advice from me, he’s an incredible artist and person. I am so proud to be working with him on The Voice and to have this opportunity to get to know him. We both share a bond of having hits very young in our careers… I already feel Ricky is a great friend. Love him!

Will you be bringing him to Mardi Gras?
I wish !!! No this Mardi Gras isn’t on the cards for Ricky.

What can we expect from Delta in 2013?
THE VOICE which is even better than last year – the talent is exceptional and Seal, Joel and Ricky are my blessing for this year – I love working and sharing music with these men. They are each so special and I love them. For me, there’s another new single and further shows in the pipeline whilst being in many parts of the world with new music!

Delta Goodrem in Harper's BAZAAR's April issue

Delta Goodrem is featured in the April issue of Harper’s BAZAAR Australia. Delta talks to the magazine about her recent tour ” and The Voice.

Check out the scans and amazing photos in the gallery.

‘What goes on tour stays on tour’ isn’t so for DELTA GOODREM, who invites BAZAAR photographer Simon Lekias to capture the quiet moments on the road for her recent Australian shows. KELLIE HUSH catches up with the performer.

I don’t know what led me to believe that all musicians live a life on the road not dissimilar to the one Anthony Kiedis describes in his 2004 autobiography, Scar Tissue. Maybe not to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers sex-drugs-and-more-drugs extreme, but I did have it in my head that most would walk off-stage buzzing, unwind with a few drinks, wake at noon and then do it all over again the next day. Delta Goodrem balks at the very suggestion.

“There’s no way I could do that. It takes a while to wind down, your hear is racing and you always have to talk to a lot of people straight after a performance, but it isn’t worth me having a drink because my vocal cords are stretching out and my voice will get tired,” says the 28-year-old. “You have to wrap yourself in cotton wool and be disciplined like an athlete is when they’re competing. You have to get good sleep, you have to keep hydrated, you have to eat the right things on the day of the show and you have to be prepared. I have to be so alert when I’m onstage because you are in charge of this big, beautiful thing. You have to make sure everyone is having a great time and have instinct: ‘Do I need to lighten things up a bit right now? Do I need to get a bit more serious and artistic now?’ A hot chocolate after a show is my real necessity.

“But – [and thank goodness there is a “but”, as I’m feeling like Marianne Faithful next to her Virgin Mary] I do look forward to a dirty martini after a tour is over. I was in the studio recently with [former Eurythmics guitarist and now producer and solo artist] Dave Stewart and he made me this dirty martini, because it’s his thing too, and it was amazing.”

We are sitting on a big bed in a Sydney hotel suite sipping bottled water, going through the tour images on photographer Simon Lekias’s laptop. Goodrem’s Christmas songs EP (Christmas) is playing in the background and every now and again she breaks into song. The singer just flew in from Los Angeles, where she lives in the Hollywood Hills with her cat and housemate/collaborating partner, Vince Pizzinga, and headed straight to BAZAAR’s shoot. If she’s exhausted [I would be], she isn’t showing it.

“Simon is such a great spirit to have on tour and he was so conscious of my space but captured all of these incredible moments,” she says. “I need my alone time in general and when I’m on tour that doesn’t change. I get my clarity from being myself – it is really important to me. On tour my quiet times are when I’m at the piano. Ah, it is just beautiful.” I tell her my favourite shot is the one of her playing piano in the Hamer Hall at Arts Centre Melbourne. “I actually love the guitar picture,” she counters. “I wrote a lot of the new album [Child of the Universe] on the guitar and I get really energised when I play, which the image really captures. When you are naive to an instrument, different melodies come to you.”

Goodrem says there weren’t any Almost Famous moments on the road as her music family are a tight bunch, but the tour wasn’t without drama. Before a performance at the State Theatre in Sydney in early November, Goodrem burnt her legs after spilling boiling water from a humidifier. The show did go on, but the pain and effects from treating the burns worsened as the show progressed and ultimately Goodrem got to a point where she couldn’t continue performing. “It was so horrible; I felt I let everyone down,” she says.

Goodrem has been performing since she was 13 and has rarely been out of the media glare since she was 18. Her high-profile relationships with Mark Philippoussis, Brian McFadden, Nick Jonas and, most recently, her co-star on Channel Nine’s The Voice Darren McMullen have provided great fodder for gossip columns. Her judging role on The Voice last year also made Goodrem a hot topic on social media, some comments complimentary, others critical. But, as the saying goes, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger; she is back for the second season this month and says, “This year, I’m going to be a little more fiery. It’s like, ‘Bring it on!’

“I feel very differently about it now I’m out of the storm,” she continues. “When I was in, it was up and down and I thought there would be no end to it. It was hard. I’m the least controversial artist you could meet: I’ve only ever given everyone my best, I don’t try to be controversial and I don’t bite. Even when I am provoked, I don’t bite,” she insists.

“If a minority decides to be nasty then I can’t control it [but] I don’t accept it either. Keep it to yourself because I don’t look at it. I feel sorry for them that they have to express that anger, but I’m not listening or reading. But here’s the thing: no one said it to my face. They didn’t even send it to my Twitter account. When it first flared up I didn’t even see it. At least have the guts to say it to my face.”

I take this as my opening. Is there any romance in her life right now? “Romance? There’s always romance,” she replies. “Yes, I’m having fun.” Cheers to you, Delta Goodrem.

Nicole Richie and Delta Goodrem open up about their “beautiful” friendship as Who magazine reveals its Most Beautiful People of 2013.

They already share a bond that spans two countries and several years, now designer Nicole Richie and singer Delta Goodrem’s friendship has been captured in a stunning photo shoot to mark their status as two of the world’s most beautiful women.

Both taking out the coveted covergirl position for 2013 in WHO’s Most Beautiful People list, Richie, 31, and Goodrem, 28, have opened up about their unique connection and what they have come to admire about each other since they were first introduced by Richie’s husband, Good Charlotte frontman, Joel Madden.

“What I’m most drawn to about Delta is her talent,” Fashion Star mentor Richie revealed during WHO’s exclusive shoot in Los Angeles’s Pacific Palisades. “The way she can just belt out a song was so rare to see. Her singing is unreal, her talent is beyond.”

Goodrem, whose friendship with Richie has blossomed since she moved to LA three years ago, credits the mum of two for her strong family values, incredible style and support of women. “I admire so much about Nicole,” Goodrem told WHO. “She is a great mum, and great wife to Joel. She’s a girl’s girl, she loves women and she supports them. She is a woman that I think many women aspire to be.”

While both concede their covergirl status on WHO’s Most Beautiful People issue was “a little hard to take in,” the two glamazons relished the opportunity to spend a day together striking poses and sharing laughs during the picturesque shoot on March 21. “I will be passing these shots around to everybody,” said Richie, laughing. “I am very honoured.”

Changing tempo: Delta Goodrem is finally ready to let her hair down

The long, flowing tresses. The earnest, heartfelt singing behind the piano, most often with bare feet. This has been Delta Goodrem’s modus operandi as a performer for years, particularly during special appearances and television performances.

But it’s an image the singer admits she has stuck to ever since the release of her hit debut album Innocent Eyes a decade ago. At 28, Goodrem wants to shake things up a little – and not just with her haircut.

“You know, I don’t always have to be behind a piano,” she says. “I have many, many more layers as a performer, which I’m excited to explore.”

She admits the piano has often been used as a symbol for her seriousness as a musician.

“[But] I think you all know that I write the songs, I don’t need to remind people … For the first time ever I don’t feel the need to be as intense about everything. I’m actually a young woman – let’s have fun.”"

With the release of her new single Heart Hypnotic, which went straight into the top 10 of the ARIA Charts last week, Goodrem is signalling a shift away from the persona she has built up over many years. Even her song, written with OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder, is bright, uplifting and a good old-fashioned dancing tune.

“Heart Hypnotic is about loving music,” she says. “It’s about, ‘I don’t know what this is, I don’t know what this melody is, but I know I love it, I’m hypnotised by the beat.’ There wasn’t another layer, and that’s unusual for me.

“It’s more just [about] celebrating new music and a new phase of feeling very free in music – and me sharing my fun side a lot more. I was so young when I started, so you naturally have a way about how you, you know, have been able to protect yourself for so long. And then just to throw caution to the wind and be kind of able to resonate through music again.

“To be able to do Livin’ La Vida Loca, to do Heart Hypnotic [in television performances], it’s so much fun.”

Unfortunately, Goodrem’s personal transformation – and her new sense of freedom – had negative beginnings.

It stemmed from the intense criticism (including abusive Twitter tirades) she received from some viewers of The Voice, particularly during the first season of the show, a period she admits was intensely difficult.

“It was as though everyone had forgotten what I’d done …” she says, trailing off.

Innocent Eyes sold more than 4.5 million copies and had five No.1 singles, not to mention a collection of ARIA Awards. (Sadly, at the time, Goodrem’s battle with cancer was also headline news). Ten years on, she is upbeat about her new musical direction.

“It feels great to just move into this next phase of my musical career,” she says. “I think last year was always going to happen … I had to shed my own skin of letting my guard down.

“[But] it was one of the hardest years, last year. I’ve learnt so much. I never thought I’d say this, but I’m really appreciative of everything that happened … because I feel like I went in this year going, ‘I’m just going to be myself and do what I do.”‘

Goodrem is focusing her sights on the US market again, with plans to release another album next year. It’s not the first time she’s had a crack at the charts there. In fact, she’s been trying for many years, and has had notable pockets of success as a live performer.

“I feel like I believe in the right timing of things and I’ve still got a lot of support there,” she says. “The right song at the right moment is always key. Yet I’ve been having these wonderful experiences, like singing with Michael Bolton this year on Ellen [The Ellen DeGeneres Show].”

Goodrem confirms she will be writing an album specifically for a US release.

“Next year’s going to be a busy year,” she says. “It goes in waves and this is an exciting wave again. I’ve learnt in my career that it’s all different, you just go with the moments …

“What’s been nice is I feel people are going back to the music; I feel that in my heart. It’s been nice to hear people talk about the music [again] – and that’s all I ever got into it for.”

Delta Goodrem’s single Heart Hypnotic is out now through Sony Music. It will be added as a bonus track to her latest album, Child of the Universe.

Delta Goodrem in October's issue of InStyle – Repackaged 'Innocent Eyes' due for release!

Performing has always come naturally to Delta Goodrem. Having made her first TV appearance at seven and signed a record deal at 15, the now 28-year-old has amassed an impressive portfolio of albums and TV and film appearances. While her career means she spends a large amount of her time in LA, she still loves everything Australia has to offer. We captured the singer at Hyams Beach on the NSW South Coast.

How was the shoot? “It was beautiful. You could see through the water, which was absolutely stunning. The whole area was really calm.”

What were your favourite fashion pieces on the day? “I loved the white dress by Alex Perry, with the [Camilla and Marc] bikini underneath—it was really beautiful. And I liked the structure of the second outfit I wore [Dion Lee pants and an NLP swimsuit]. The pants crossed over at the front and looked strong.”

What do you buy most for your own wardrobe? “I’m pretty naughty when it comes to Prada bags—I buy a lot. You can be wearing anything but if you’ve got a good pair of sunglasses and a good bag, you’re okay.”

Do you have a fashion motto? “You just have to know yourself and have fun. I enjoy expressing myself through what I wear; you’ve got to embrace your personality and however you’re feeling on any particular day.”

Has your style evolved over the years? “I’ve always had a slightly boho-chic look but now I feel different and want to play with my style. I’m enjoying strength in my clothes and being a bit bold. I feel comfortable in tighter outfits. I’ve found strength from events that have happened to me—they’ve reshaped my style.”

You’ve achieved a lot in your 28 years… “It’s true. Sometimes when I reflect on past events, I feel like I’m talking about things that happened 20 years ago, rather than 10 years.”

Your first album, Innocent Eyes, is being repackaged as an acoustic version and hits shelves next month—what was the catalyst for reworking it? “It’s 10 years since its original release and it’s just been named the best-charting album by an Australian in 30 years. It was seven-and-half months at number one—and that was really special. So basically it’s in celebration of ARIA releasing these statistics. It was an incredible moment and I’m extremely proud.”

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self? “I could never have predicted the highs and lows that would happen, so I can’t [give advice]. I can only say, ‘Hold on tight.’”
